This is something every Offroader, Jeep owner, overlander, or any 4×4 vehicle owner should know how to do! Whether you have a winch, or just want to be able to offer assistance on the trails, this will be useful one day when you least expect it.
In this video i show you how to fix a broken synthetic winch line, no matter where you are, with very basic tools. In the past, people have always thought you needed special tools (AKA Fids) and other splicing devices. Sure, those help and will make the process faster. However i feel they are an unnecessary item to bring with you in your Jeep during offroad adventures. As i like to say “You can have a thousand tools, but knowledge is the best one”.
Now.. i know your next question.. “Ben thats cool and all, but what happens if my line breaks and i only have 40ft left”… there are other processes to actually splice the lines back together as one, and i will try to make a future video on that. But in all honesty, and from my experience, this process is easier to do, and easier to accomplish on the trail. So, if you do break off a ton of line, just use a winch line extension or a tow strap to help get your distance back in the meantime. Or even do this process on the broken end (attached to the winch), and then create another spliced eye within the eye of the one you just did (they both join up in the eyes).
Obviously this trail repair will only work on synthetic winch lines, which i prefer over steel for multiple reasons.
I really hope you enjoyed this video, and learned something from it! I urge you to find some old winch line and give it a practice shot sometime!
Thanks for watching, i know it was a tad bit different than my previous videos of Jeep Wrangler mods and upgrades. I am trying to bring back some more teaching and DIY style videos back into the channel. We are all in this together as a Jeeping Community, and i would like to see it grow strongly!
I will end this by saying, if you do actually want to buy a Fid to carry in your Jeep, then i would strongly suggest the Factor-55 fid listed in the link below. They make it very simple to use, and it has an ingenious line attachment device.
